MLTC Newsflash re Davis Cup
DREAM DEBUT FOR CONOR GANNON
Anyone who was following the exploits of Ireland's Davis Cup team over the weekend will have been proud of the collective display of our lads in securing a very difficult away win in El Salvador.
For us Monkstown members that pride was heightened by the phenomenal debut performance that Conor Gannon delivered. Nominated in the opening singles match, Conor commenced his Davis Cup career with a comprehensive 6-1, 6-0 win on Saturday to give Ireland a 1-0 lead. El Salvador won the second singles match and Conor was back on court yesterday (Sunday) where he partnered Dave O'Hare in a crucial doubles match. They played against an El Salvador pair that included Marcelo Arevalo, who is currently ranked number 16 on the ATP Doubles rankings and was as high as number 5 in the world rankings as recently as last November, following his win at the French Open Men's Doubles event. Conor and Dave produced a stunning display and won in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3.
Ireland followed up with wins in the remaining matches to win the tie 4-1 and thus qualify for the World Group 1 playoffs, to be played next February.
We congratulate the Irish team, but especially Conor and the Irish team Captain, Conor Niland, who is now of course a member of Monkstown and who will be our special guest coach at an event on Thursday week (28th September).
Conor Gannon is an inspiration to all of us, but in particular to our junior members who have followed his progress so keenly over the years. They are lucky to have such a humble and hard-working role model and we salute him for his achievements and congratulate his parents, Dave & Karen, on being such supportive and encouraging parents. Conor now heads back to the University of Memphis to continue his scholarship.
See you for Summer League Conor!
All the best, Stephen
