Snippets 27/08/20
As if the restrictions weren't difficult enough - particularly no spectators - the weather has added to the tough running of the Championships. Helen and Ciaran have certainly done their utmost to the smooth running of the various events - ably assisted by Anne - although it must be said that the competitors have been most co-operative and played matches under sometimes hurricane conditions. It really is a great achievement to be having the Championships at all.
We're easing towards Finals Day on Saturday with the traditional Mixed Final on Friday night...oh for a beer or glass of wine watching what is always a super final! But all is not lost..Jacqui (McCabe) has arranged to have the Finals, listed for Court 1, to be streamed Live through our Instagram page - Monkstown Lawn Tennis Club. Members not on Instagram can download app - your children / grandchildren will be able to assist on this! The following is the link:

Conor is following up on his great win in Fitz last week with another exciting week at the Sutton Open. Last night he had a super win over the No 1 seed and former professional Peter Bothwell.
He plays his Semi Final tomorrow...keep it going Conor ..you're on a roll!
Also back from a stint on the "circuit" are Greg & Jana (Ryan). They played in the Tramore Open last week and each won their respective singles events! Congrats to you both...how about the Mixed?!
Our juniors were also well represented with Isobel & Zoe Craig travelling to Letterkenny - Zoe won the U/12 singles & Isobel reached the semis of both the U/14 & U/16 events & winning 3rd/4th playoff in both...following in mummy's (Gina) footsteps...sorry Robin!!
Another casualty of COVID-19 is the Senior League...just got confirmation yesterday that this league has now been cancelled.
Court availability will return to normal next week. Thanks to all members for their understanding over the last couple of months at the restrictive hours.. but I think everyone got their fair share of play.
N.B. Re: playing tennis when having to use a floodlight card..There will be a container at the main door with plastic gloves, to facilitate entering the club to insert card. Please take a glove, open door, insert card, close door & discard glove in bin provided. Nominate one person from your game to insert the card. Hope it doesn't sound all too basic but it is very important if we are to continue playing under lights.
Only a handful of you will remember the name Dermot Whelan...unfortunately Dermot passed away in his adopted home country of New Zealand on Tuesday last. Dermot was a very talented member in the 60's/ 70's He reached the Final of the Irish Junior Championships in 1962. He contested the Final of the Men’s Singles here on no fewer than six occasions..winning the Title in 1970 - 1972 - 1973 and 1974. Would you believe he received the Snippets every week & was thrilled to be kept informed of everything "Monkstown".
That's it for this week...don't forget to streamline the Finals from 11 am on Saturday next. Nice one Garry last Saturday!!
