Club Notices

Hi All!

Hope you’re all enjoying the summer so far – weather is a bit of a mixed bag but sure we’re Irish, we’re used to that, just have to get out and get on with it!!

I’m sure you will have noticed that the courts underwent some routine maintenance last week which will keep them in peak condition, and thanks go to Kevin Polley/Brian Kelly for all their hard work.

Reminder Dates:  Senior Handicaps         11th  – 23rd July

                           Senior Championships 12th  – 27th August

Senior Handicaps

 We hope you are all getting ready for the first Big Event of the Summer.  The Senior Handicaps start on Monday July 11th and run through to Finals Day on Saturday 23rd, with the Handicaps BBQ that evening.    Entry will open from Monday 20th of June.  We will send a Newsflash email with all the details, and we will post the link to the Tournament Software on the club website.

 Sarah and Isabella are recruiting volunteers to run the MLTC Handicaps Café during tournament evenings – There are tasty treats planned, so a full roster of volunteers is needed to run the café.  We are very welcoming of younger members (16+) who might like this kind of work experience too.  If you have availability to help with this, please text Isabella on 087 2194844.

 And for anyone who has not played in the Handicaps before, we run 5 main events, Men’s and Ladies Singles, Men’s and Ladies Doubles, and Mixed Doubles.   Players are assigned a partner for the Doubles events and every player or pair are given a handicap which makes for exciting and competitive tennis. For those knocked out in the first round, there are the Plate competitions in the Double’s events. Lots of chances to play and to Win!   Matches will mostly be played on weeknight evenings, and we look forward to having supporters and spectators come along for the great Monkstown atmosphere during the tournament and to grab a bite and a drink in the MLTC Handicaps Café.

Ladies Summer League

Great news for Monkstown Ladies, we have two of our teams through to the League Quarter Finals;

A big congrats to our Ladies 1st Team who kept up winning ways throughout the competition.  They topped their table and will play their Quarter Finals at home.  Congrats to Nicky Kinsella, team captain, and her team, Lisa O’Shea, Kate Grennan, Lucy Byrne, Julie Ryan, Aisling Cullen, Rachel McAuley, Amy Ryan, and Isobel Craig.   The team would really love for as many supporters as possible to the Quarter Finals, in Monkstown, this Saturday 18th June at 11am.

Our Ladies 4th Team had a super win against Shankill on Tuesday night in the first round of the Playoffs and have secured promotion to Class 3.  It was a very tight contest, and with some of our players unavailable we were very pleased to have Isobel Craig and Clara McGannon join us on the team, both winning their matches.  The atmosphere in Shankill was fabulous, and we were very appreciative of the supporters who travelled from Monkstown.  They joined a big crowd on the balcony watching the deciding match, Clara played a long and very exciting singles game, holding her nerve in a nail-biting finish, and securing that final point for the team.   Massive congrats to Lisa O’Sullivan, team captain, and everyone on the team, Lara Sommerville, Arlene Sommerville, Sara Stevenson, Clodagh Murray, Sonya Mahood, Lisa Blake, Martina Keevey, Irene Nolan, Isobel Craig and Clara McGannon.  Quarter Finals are in Celbridge this Saturday 18th June at 11am.

A big shout out to all our younger players, playing league for Monkstown for the first time and winning so many precious points for us.  Well done to Isobel Craig, Clara McGannon, Isabelle Blake, Ella Blake, Lily Cleary and Grace Cleary.  The future is bright!

And finally,  a very genuine thank you to all the team captains, there is so much work getting the teams out each week and organising substitutes.  So well done to Nicky Kinsella, Claire McCambridge, Jana Langford, Lisa O’Sullivan, Karen Geraghty, Deirdre Hornshaw, Noreen Cleary and Jemma Houlihan.

Clodagh Murray, Ladies Captain
