UPDATE FROM STEPHEN
There was a strong turnout of Monkstown members in Fitzwilliam last evening for the launch of THE RACKET, Conor Niland's excellent book that recounts his tennis journey from his time as Ireland's leading junior player, through his US College scholarship and on to his seven-year career as a professional tennis player on the men's circuit.
It was a wonderful evening in the company of many Irish tennis greats, all of whom can relate to aspects of Conor's story.
THE RACKET has attracted huge interest since its launch last Thursday and sits at number 2 in the Irish non-fiction bestsellers' list. A phenomenal achievement in such a short space of time. It is currently on the Eason’s Book of the Month list and is an obvious 'must read' for those of you going on holiday in the coming weeks.
Congrats Conor on this wonderful book and we recommend that all members buy a copy. There is something in it for tennis players of all standards!
Now to our 2nd Conor! Conor Gannon qualified for the ITF Men's tournament in Rabat, Morocco this week. He successfully navigated three matches in qualifying but was unfortunately beaten in the first round of the main draw yesterday.
Conor now moves to Casablanca for next week's ITF tournament.
He picked up his first points in Croatia last month and we wish him continued success in his pursuit of more ranking points before he heads back to Memphis at the end of the summer.
It's Junior Open tournament time right now and the venue this week is Bray for the Bray Junior 500 Open. No less than 13 of our Juniors entered - a great turnout. Robyn Kennedy playing in 1/4 final of the U16 today and Richie Kennedy playing in the semis of the U/12 tomorrow...Mia Keogh was just pipped in the 1/4's of the U/12 singles. Well done to all entrants and good luck next week - all 17 of you - as you head to Carrickmines for the Open week there.
Our own Men’s Captain Declan was on the circuit himself last week - and unseeded, won the Kenmare Senior Doubles Open event...Congrats Declan.. all that Monday night coaching must be paying off!!
Now a word about the 2 Sarah's!
Sarah Healy had a fantastic European Championship - qualifying for the Final of the 1500m. It's her first Senior event. She's with an amazing group of female athletes and it all augurs well for the Olympics. Congrats Sarah!
Sarah Mc Auley featured on the Irish Women’s' Hockey team that claimed silver in the FIH Nation Cup last Sunday - a terrific final v Spain, the host nation, in front of a packed house.
The team finished 2nd and climbed 2 places in the World rankings, up to No 12. A good week for Sarah and Ireland - playing 5 matches in 7 days in very hot temperatures. Congrats Sarah!
Let's hope our Leaving Cert students are battling through their exams with success...you're nearly there !
To end on a romantic note! - 2 weddings in 2 days of Monkstown members!
Alan O'Mahony & Bex are getting married today in Dubrovnik...
Sean O'Rourke & Millie are getting married tomorrow in Dublin...
Good wishes from all here in the tennis club!
All the best Stephen
