The evening continued with drinks and nibbles and a draw for the ten raffle winners. Together with the proceeds from the St. Patrick's Day Ladies Tournament, MLTC has raised €2,450 for Goal.

Charity raffle prize-winners who were not in attendance on Thursday night can collect their prizes from the office.  Congratulations to Pat Cowley, Margaret Heagney, Alfie Smyth & Patricia Woods!

Jennifer Crotty.  An appreciation by our Head Coach Stephen O'Shea

Last Friday morning I arrived in the tennis club to be greeted with the smiling face of Jen Ben (Jennifer). She had a full bag of groceries by her feet packed with goodies , as that evening a posse of her pals were visiting and she was excited at the prospect of welcoming them and entertaining them. On the table there was another bag which contained my daily chicken sandwich and newspaper. Jen Ben had decided to collect them for me on her way to the club as a surprise!

We had a brief chat and arranged to hit a few balls the following afternoon with some of the Juniors.  I watched her as she slipped away with her bag of goodies to catch the bus to Deans Grange before boarding a second bus to Cherrywood. I paused for a few seconds to appreciate the feeling I had inside - as every time we met I felt the touch of an angel.

Jen Ben was one of the best players Monkstown ever produced. I always marvelled at her tenacity and fighting spirit on the many occasions I witnessed her in action - be it at the National Junior Championships in Fitzwilliam, playing for the Ladies 1st Team in all leagues or at the Club Championships, where she was twice Ladies Champion, in 2009 & 2011. (She also won the Mixed Doubles title in 2016 with yours truly - a treasured memory)

I'm so thankful to Jen Ben's parents, Tom and Paula, for allowing me the opportunity to play a small role in their daughter's development from a relatively young age. There is always a sense of fulfillment and pride when a 'pupil' tastes success on a tennis court - but real pride is only experienced through witnessing the development of somebody who blossoms into a caring human being.

Jen Ben cared for others like few that I've encountered and was a very special young lady.

Slán for now Jen Ben.  Ar dheis Dè go raibh a anam.  S O'S  x
