 UPDATE  FROM  STEPHEN

Huge congrats to Conor Niland, whose excellent book, THE RACKET, won the prestigious William Hill Sports Book of the year at the 2024 awards ceremony in London this week.

It is the first time this award has been given to a tennis-related book and Conor is only the third Irish winner of the award, following Paul Kimmage (1990) and Eamonn Magee (2018).

Conor's story is fascinating and relatable and showcases Conor's humility and modesty throughout.

We are privileged to have him as a member of Monkstown and we are looking forward to seeing him back hitting a tennis ball soon, so that he can join Sine and their beautiful children, Emma and Tom - all who have become regular fixtures on our courts in recent years.

Finally it was great to see the club awarded another large Grant from the Department of Sport. The latest Grant, which is just under €134k, will be used to upgrade all six tennis courts, which will greatly enhance the playing experience for our members. We will also have funds available to upgrade the fencing around each court.

A lot of work goes on behind the scenes to get these projects over the line and I commend the sub-committee and Kevin McGrath in their work and Johnny, who was advising them on the necessary steps along the way. I also thank Senator Barry Ward, who is always so available to assist us in these matters.

The U/18 girls team were just pipped (literally!) 10/5 in the final set tie break of the last match in their League Final v Carrickmines last Sunday.  The tennis was of the highest standard and they gained promotion to Class 1 for next year.  Well done Isobel - Zoe - Amelia & Clara... super achievement. Coincidentally, Isobel & Zoe are Conor's nieces!

All the best             Stephen
