MLTC Club Notices 27/04/23
Newsletter 27th April 2023
What a great event we had last Sunday for Captains Day. From a beautiful sunny afternoon to great tennis, a fabulously decorated club house to a Wimbledon draw – the afternoon was enjoyed by all who attended.
Betty Rafferty’s son David donated the Wimbledon tickets to the club in memory of his mom and his brothers all came down for the draw. We are delighted to announce that Aoife Collier was the Monday winner while Susie Kennelly was the Tuesday winner. The club raised €10,000 from the draw of which €5000 was raised for the Beaufort Day service and presented to Sr Nora who also attended the draw. Betty also wanted the club to have her lovely garden statue which has been in place in the club for some months and is frequently admired.
A special thanks to our super captains Aoife and Aaron (the A Team!) for organising a great day and to Carole and Mary for their wonderful Italian themed clubhouse and meal. It was a super success.
WIMBLEDON TICKETS - CONGRATULATIONS
Many congratulations to Aoife Collier and Susie Kennelly on winning the Wimbledon Centre Court Debenture Tickets donated to MLTC by the family of the late Betty Rafferty. Wishing them both a fantastic trip to London in July!
THANK YOU
Aoife and Aaron would like to thank everyone who supported this year's Captains Day and helped to make it such a success. Thankfully the sun shone and 48 members participated in a mixed doubles tennis event, which included a fast paced doubles game with Stephen and Mickey Mac. Carole and Mary arranged a fantastic lemon-themed event and the clubhouse was beautifully decorated in yellow and blue. 64 people sat down to a delicious Italian meal provided by Jason Jensen and his team, while Bogdan Rusin serenaded us on the violin. There was even a bit of dancing!
COURT BOOKINGS AND CANCELLATIONS
Several members have remarked that courts are being booked, but are unused and not cancelled.
Please be mindful of other members, particularly as court availability is further limited over the coming months (such as summer league campaigns).
If you are unsure of the court booking rules please refer to the club website (club rules<https://www.monkstownltc.com/club-rules>), consult the office team or a committee member.
Court bookings for coaching should be booked by the coaches or through the office.
Cancellations should be made at the earliest possible time so other member can avail of the courts.
Handbags and Glad Rags Ladies Doubles Tournament
We are delighted to be hosting a Tennis for Cancer event in the club on Sunday 21st May. The event is a “Handbags and Glad Rags” ladies doubles tournament followed by lunch.
The format for the tennis competition is that there will be 8 teams of 6 players. Each team will consist of 1 pair of class 2/3 standard, 1 pair of class 4/5 standard and 1 pair of Class 6/7 standard, so we are hoping for wide participation. There will be two groups and initial stages will be timed round robin matches (20 minutes) followed by semi-finals and a final. Tennis will start at 10 am sharp with lunch at 1pm
We are also asking you to donate “pre loved” clothing and handbags in good condition which we will display and sell on the day - so you can browse the rails when you are off court or at lunch. Jewellery and scarves are also welcome. We will be collecting these donations on Saturday 20th so we can have them ready to display on the following morning
Entry fee is 30 euro for tennis plus lunch or 20 euro for lunch only. You can also pop up anytime if you just want to browse the rails!
All proceeds will go to Tennis for Cancer charity which was set up by long time Monkstown member Grace Owens
Sign up will be open next week on easy payments and we look forward to seeing lots of you on the day!!
For further information contact Catherine Keane, Carole Curtin or Aoife Stokes
